Field Training Officer

In these times of dwindling hiring pools, it is important that each recruit in an FTO program be given effective training that offers every reasonable opportunity to succeed as a new officer without sacrificing the standards of the agency.  Learning in the field training environment depends on both training and feedback.  This FTO Class uses the San Jose Model of evaluation and provides the FTO with the tools to be an effective one-on-one trainer and coach.  The class is structured to use the participants’ own experiences to learn the principles of learning and evaluation in realistic situations.  Participants will learn and utilize adult instruction methodologies and  innovative approaches to training.  Participants will also be able to document performance, to recognize the trainee’s learning style and use it to expedite the training, to plan remedial training to correct deficiencies in performance, and to provide critical input into retention and termination decisions.

 The 5-Day course starts at 8:00 am each day.

Class is limited to 20 students. Per POST guidelines on attendance do apply. 

The class is funded through a grant from Colorado POST.   Although it is free to individual students, POST has committed a substantial amount of funds to bring this class to this area.   If you cannot attend, please email Karen Pendergraft at [email protected] to withdraw at least 5 business days before the start date of the class to allow others to attend.
